Match and Mismatch: Outcome 4

Match and Mismatch, Studio- Give and Take

Final outcome for Match and Mismatch are my gifs. I initially wanted to make something based on photographs of my hand manipulating the bench so it’s different lengths or using the postcards but I don’t think I could make that look refined enough and also because of time management I had to make priorities hah. So I tried manipulating my bench image in Photoshop instead to see where that got me. Making it digitally this way it would relate to the poster as well, with the solid black background so that’s a plus!

Movements: Research 3

Dialogue Studio, Movements

I have been looking more into the zero movement and especially the works of Yves Klein. Klein was maybe the most experimental out of the people associated with the movement and the real motor, working a lot with performance, sculptures and experimental painting. He painted using his hands, people’s bodies, fire and was obsessed with blue as he saw it as the perfect colour.

I looked into Heinz Mack’s work more as well. He does installations, sculptural work, textures.. but the thing I am interested in the most is his work with lines and his passion for making vibration. Pretty abstract and strange sounding maybe, but looking at his work it makes more sense:

Google Engage: Outcome 1

Dialogue Studio, google engage

For my abstract wave approach I started making some test videos to see how I could go about this. After several tries and experimenting in After Effects but not getting the result I wanted I felt a bit frustrated as I thought I could never get this to be what I wanted it to be. It either looked too light and flimsy or not regular enough but I got there eventually with the help of a tutorial that taught me how to transform sound into an abstract pattern that reacts to the wavelengths of the sound.

Pastiche 1560: Development 2

CIP, pastiche 1560

When researching videos of Calder and his mobiles I always seem to end up watching the same one where a boy walks into Calder’s workshop and is amazed by everything that moves by its own. (video here) He stares at the mobiles hanging from the ceiling, living their own sort of life of there, creating their own universe. He looks at this play for a long time, eventually finding it hard to differ between dream and reality as he is more and more mesmerised by them. Every time I watch this I want to make mobiles.

Last time I thought about this project I was really into doing a stop motion animation. Today I ended up giving the mobiles another go and made another one.

Pastiche 1560: Research 3

CIP, pastiche 1560

Been reading up more on Calder, his career and how he came to create the art he created to get a better understanding of his working approach and philosophy as it will help me for my pastiche. Immersing myself in videos from different exhibitions about his work, videos that other people have made about him, exhibition reviews and articles about the artist from museums previously exhibiting his work I feel like I have more research to lean back on and backing up my decisions developing this project. There are so many things about this guy though that I really wanna capture in my video and at the moment it’s giving me serious creative block.. I’ll have to put this aside for a couple of days I think.
