Studio- Give and Take, Walk the line

Due to time being too short before the hand in, I only managed to prepare 2 screens for print and then only actually print one of them. The result came out really nice though and I am very happy with it. However, I did realise that two of my designs might need some tweaking in terms of how big or small the halftone image is (the size of the dots I mean) because I did have some difficulties washing out the emulsion from the screen with the dots being so small. I decided I am going to redo all of them for the final hand in before the summer because I would really like to see them all screenprinted, it just makes the colours so much more vibrant and alive. Something that digital print cannot do- especially if you want that electric blue and red colour I am after which I took from my “child water” gif because I think that colour combination really works and looks great on a poster. I did try some other colours as well, more pastel-y ones because I have used that quite a lot in my gifs but I couldn’t get it to have the same kind of punch that I got with the vibrant red. I also thought of inverting the red and blue elements but that made my thread poster look like blood running down from the top. So I decided to leave the red background with blue objects for all of them as that was most effective and looked best.

Final outcome for Match and Mismatch are my gifs. I initially wanted to make something based on photographs of my hand manipulating the bench so it’s different lengths or using the postcards but I don’t think I could make that look refined enough and also because of time management I had to make priorities hah. So I tried manipulating my bench image in Photoshop instead to see where that got me. Making it digitally this way it would relate to the poster as well, with the solid black background so that’s a plus!

So progress with the gifs has been a bit slow of late due to lack of inspiration and nothing looking like I wanted it to. Until today! Making a gif out of the crayon tests I did some weeks back didn’t turn out well and it just looks way better as a still image/images than a moving one as it’s not flow-y enough (seen below).

Today I have been working with kinetic typography and making a video reflecting my movement. Started out by researching kinetic typography and found the Swiss designer Dominique Schmitz very inspirational. Similar to the Zero movement his work is full of lines and overlapping elements creating vibration and movement and I especially liked these two seen below. Even the colours are right. Initially I wanted to create something like the left example as it feels like a modern spin on what I am looking into but then I started thinking about type as image and got more interested in how I could use type to create pictures and started sketching with the letters I, Z and O.

Pastiche 1560: Development 3

Deciding I want to create my pastiche digitally I went back to a screenshot I saved months ago when starting this project. It’s taken from the website of A2/SW/HK and is the visual identity they did for an architecture firm. It’s not visible in this picture but the black negative space of some of the letters that by themselves create abstract forms, move up and down, sort of floating in space.

This movement and the shapes to me really breathes Calder but in a more “modern” way if you want to call it that. The shapes have a weightlessness about them that embodies the whole way Calder looks at form and how sculpture does not have to be static. Nothing is pulled down by gravity but rather living its own life- moving in a random way and every shape has its own personality. This is what I am basing my video on.

 

Pastiche 1560: Alexander calder research 1

Artists and Inspiration, CIP, pastiche 1560

Alexander Calder, originator of the mobile, was an American sculptor that managed the art of combining elegant with quirky. His mobiles are both adult and childish at the same time, every one of them having a personality of their own – making them easy to love for a wide range of people.

In my pastiche of him I will aim to capture his playfulness and simply the way in which he had fun when making his mobiles and his art, enjoying his work. The technique I will be using is either stop motion or purely digital. Or maybe filming his mobiles and how it moves, maybe placing it in different environments to see how it changes. Pretty undecided basically! I will have to see where this project takes me.

The one think I do know though is that my colours for this will be blue, red, black and white. Think lots of circles and plenty of black lines moving about. Up and away!
