Design competition, Summer show exhibition

The first thing I started to consider when thinking about ideas for the show was how the space looks. As we already know where the exhibition will take place and the conditions we will have to work with, honestly all I could see were problems. How are we going to cover up that door, how are people going to understand how to navigate in a place where I myself have lost my way several times, can we use the ugly lockers in the narrow corridor to our advantage somehow or will they just have to stay an ugly element in the show, how can we make the dark and stuffy 2nd floor feel lighter and bigger etc.. Our exhibition space kind of bummed me down a bit but realising that it is what it is and that there is one big advantage with it (no more carrying heavy furniture to another place) I began researching ways to make the space work.

Screenprinting! Starting to create my design for this I took inspiration from these two sketches I quickly did a couple of days ago in a sudden rush of inspiration where I tried to make the Zero expression more contemporary in a way, or pop-y but still keeping the zero vibe.

My first attempt seen below too the right worked okay, I imitated one of my letterpress results from a previous workshop, but it didn’t vibrate enough so second attempt seen to the left was an experiment in creating more fluid lines that more resemble some of the tests I created with my blue and black Klein experiments. Way better results! More alive and with more movement so that’s what I went for, for the final print in two colours.

Today I have been working with kinetic typography and making a video reflecting my movement. Started out by researching kinetic typography and found the Swiss designer Dominique Schmitz very inspirational. Similar to the Zero movement his work is full of lines and overlapping elements creating vibration and movement and I especially liked these two seen below. Even the colours are right. Initially I wanted to create something like the left example as it feels like a modern spin on what I am looking into but then I started thinking about type as image and got more interested in how I could use type to create pictures and started sketching with the letters I, Z and O.

I have been looking more into the zero movement and especially the works of Yves Klein. Klein was maybe the most experimental out of the people associated with the movement and the real motor, working a lot with performance, sculptures and experimental painting. He painted using his hands, people’s bodies, fire and was obsessed with blue as he saw it as the perfect colour.

I looked into Heinz Mack’s work more as well. He does installations, sculptural work, textures.. but the thing I am interested in the most is his work with lines and his passion for making vibration. Pretty abstract and strange sounding maybe, but looking at his work it makes more sense:

This project focuses on design history and movements. The deliverables will be a folded A2-A5 16 pager describing my exploration of chosen movement, and a motion graphic outcome. Starting off, I looked into 3 different movements I find interesting and chose De Stijl, Zero and The Washington Colour School.

De Stijl: Around 1917-1931 as a reaction to WWI, a group of Dutch artists set out to remake the world through a utopian vision and harmony and order. Exploring the ideal fusion of form and function, they wanted to eliminate all representational components, reducing painting to its elements: straight lines, plane surfaces, rectangles, and the primary colours red, yellow, blue, black and white.

For my abstract wave approach I started making some test videos to see how I could go about this. After several tries and experimenting in After Effects but not getting the result I wanted I felt a bit frustrated as I thought I could never get this to be what I wanted it to be. It either looked too light and flimsy or not regular enough but I got there eventually with the help of a tutorial that taught me how to transform sound into an abstract pattern that reacts to the wavelengths of the sound.

Today has been model making day and I feel completely creatively drained. I had planned to create shapes/ sculptures with lots of gluing together paper but after trying this method out for a couple of hours becoming more and more annoyed by the glue stains I managed to get on the paper and the overall panicky feeling I got when my glue-y fingertips continuously stuck to everything, I gave up. Instead I focused on folding only, creating shapes by bending the paper. This method was better for my sanity but it still took a lot of tries and tests before I got to a result I was happy with. It also works better visually actually as it looks more like big pieces of metal than what it did in my first approach, and that’s exactly what I want it to be. This model isn’t finished, I want to add light to it somehow (been looking into mini glowsticks and might go with that as I then can have coloured light). I’m thinking the glowsticks can go on the floor inside this pavilion to represent screens but I’ll have to try this out before making up my mind. I also need to make a little person standing in front of it for scale. One thing at a time though, now I need some rest. Phew.

So I developed my bathtub idea further thinking about involving illustration and giving the campaign a very airy feel. Putting together this moodboard:

And picking up on some things in that I made a print of a bathtub that I thought I could use as seen below left.

Sometimes we rely on randomness- being creative means that mistakes can be a good thing. And sometimes just playing with the components you have in front of you can be the best way to go because you don’t know what you’re after until you’ve done it.

A couple of days ago I explored some different ways of generating images from photographs, creating abstract and interesting results. Deriving meaning from photographs that didn’t mean just one thing, I made drawings and paintings from the emotions the image evoked or sorting it by the most to least dominant colour.
