FMP, Studio- Give and Take

With all 3 posters done and mounted on frames, the next thing to do was to photograph them. As I wanted to make postcards and smaller paper posters of the work as well, I really need good images of it to show scale, detail, craftsmanship etc. I found this task very daunting because of the scale of the posters and the fact that they need a lot of daylight to not look scruffy.

FMP, Studio- Give and Take

The biggest struggle I have had when knitting is the fact that once you have made your loops, it’s done. It’s there. The design is in the piece and there is basically no way of changing it. When I usually design something I can fiddle about with it for the longest time but now I have to make decisions and stick with them. Not used to that! So moving on to the second poster I made way more sketches for the design than I did for the first one as I was making it.

So a few problems emerged once I started really getting on with the knitting.

  1. In which way should I incorporate the colours, what would look best vs. what would be least time consuming?
  2. How do I mount it when it’s done?
  3. How do I incorporate the reflective thread I got that lights up when you shine on it? (which is a different thickness than the other yarn)

I went to an exhibition at Fotografiska when I was in Stockholm last and saw Chen Man which I found really inspiring. The way the exhibition was curated was really beautiful, the dark and light contrasting, the use of lots of red, pink and blue and the way her photographs almost looked like they shone from within.

Walk the Line: Development 3

Studio- Give and Take, Walk the line

More stitching! So came up with the idea of having something that goes back and forth for my second “old” gif, thinking about “old” as something that is continuously changing and how all new things eventually become old. I thought I could do something with lines spreading out so that it looks like a spotlight of sorts to symbolize how we choose to highlight some old things, while other old things appear to be not as important.

First gif is done! (if I don’t change my mind later on) Sowing turned out to take a lot more planning than I thought hah and I had to throw away a lot of tests before coming up with a plan that worked so everything looked cohesive. At first I just tried my hand at freestyling the lines but oh my did they come out wonky so that was a bad idea. I also realised I had to map out exactly where each colour should go in my gradient so I didn’t waste any thread (didn’t have a lot) and that was more complicated than I thought it would be. So, after drawing a little template on lined paper and marking where the holes should go, I taped it to the paper I was gonna sow in and made the holes with a needle from the start so it was just a matter of threading through the yarn later.

After an intense brainstorming and idea day last Friday I have a lot of concepts for both “child” and “may” but not really any more for “old” which was the first word I started to think about. What I have is the research I did with lines and string but I don’t know how I am going to make it into gifs or if all my gifs for that word should be line based. I also keep going back to thinking about how all the gifs will look together and how they will relate when the words are so different and will be made in different ways. It’s blocking me a little bit.

Opting for the “just do something and see where it goes”- technique, I put needle and thread to paper and just started doing. These are the yarn sketches I made and the things I learned from doing it:

Studio- Give and Take, Walk the line

Diving further down into my three words, I decided to explore other ways to make them visual and began playing around with stamps and letters to see where that led me.

For this, I started to write the single word first somewhere on the paper and then developing it into something else after reading the word over and over and capturing what I felt while reading it. I thought it would be good to see what associations I made after actually constructing the word myself, putting the letters down with my own hands.

My first project of studio Give and Take will revolve around three words: may, child and old. These words need to be investigated thoroughly and communicated visually as 10 gifs and 3 posters. Apart from that, I am also starting a drawing journal in which I will draw something everyday to form a collection of observations and thoughts in a way.
