A couple of months ago I was commissioned to create the visual identity of the Nordic Music Therapy Congress that will take place in Stockholm 2018. The client wanted something colorful that brought together the two aspects of music therapy- the scientific and calculating with the emotional and soulful and the logo mark needed to feel Nordic as the congress is a collaboration between the Nordic countries.
Mood board, by Lisa
After getting an understanding of what the client wanted, I put together a mood board of everything I connected the words Nordic, simple, shape, soul, light, constrained and music. Looking at that, I quite quickly decided on the colors blue with the contrast of pink as it reminded me of the mountains and a misty sunrise by the sea.
The light blue for me personally has a very mathematical vibe and a color I connect with grids and science- the pink standing for warmth and joy. It was very important to get the balance between rational and emotional as the congress aims to connect the different theories of music therapy that exist today and for me, that represents itself most in the colors.
Sketches for the NMTC identity, by Lisa 2016
Starting to sketch, I played around with the central letters N, M, T and C and as the tagline for the congress is come together, body & soul heart & brain, I wanted to create something that almost fit like a puzzle and worked as a unified entity, also combining a rounded, warm sans serif type with a script typeface that I think goes well together. The final mark (seen below) mirrors the mountains, the sun and the howling wind feeling inviting despite of it’s sharp edges.
As a further promotional thing for their website I animated a short film which can be viewed here.
